What Is a Psychoeducational Assessment?
A psychoeducational assessment is a certain kind of psychological assessment that places emphasis on someone who is having difficulties in learning, processing, intellectual, developmental, memory, and/or achievement areas. It is often used to investigate possible learning disorders and disabilities in reading, writing, and mathematics, as well as issues related to attention problems (ADHD), or even potential giftedness. At Emmrys Dawe Parlee Group, we use a variety of procedures and techniques when doing these assessments.
What to Expect from a Psychoeducational Assessment
First we would have an initial interview or consultation with the parents for one session to review their concerns and obtain relevant developmental, school, and family history. We may then also meet with the child, possibly with the parents, to get an initial impression of the child. Once the first 1-2 hours of consultation is completed, we would then make recommendations regarding what, if any, further assessment is recommended. This process may be shortened or lengthened depending on the complexity of the case.
Formal Assessment & Testing
Once the consultation is completed we may proceed to the more formal assessment or testing part. This may include the following: completing actual tests that measure intelligence, memory, processing, achievement, etc., having the parents complete questionnaires, having teachers complete questionnaires, reviewing any previous testing completed by other professionals or the school, reviewing the child's report cards, calling the teacher or observing in class, and other tests and assessments procedures as needed.
We then have to score, analyze, and interpret all of this information. A report is generated and we then have a feedback session with the parents to review it. The report will summarize the results; provide impressions and a diagnosis if any, as well as recommendations. Sometimes, if the parents wish, we would then have another feedback session with the school personnel and parents.
How Long Will the Assessment Take?
This type of thorough assessment usually takes between 12-20 hours. Currently, we are charging $170.00/hour (the time consulting, assessing, testing, scoring, interpreting, and writing the report is all billable). Thus, the total may run between $2040 and $3400 with an average of $2550 - $3000 (not including the second optional feedback session with the school). Again, we would discuss the estimate with the parent in the consultation period.
